Dual enrollment, also known as concurrent enrollment, is a program that allows high school students to take college courses and earn credit for both high school and college.

How it works: Students can take college courses at their high school or on a college campus, and may be able to take classes online.

Benefits: Dual enrollment can help students get a head start on college and prepare for their future careers.

Challenges: College courses are usually more rigorous and faster-paced than high school courses, and students may not be able to interact with friends as often.

Eligibility: Students should check with their high school counselor to see if they meet the requirements (GPA, test Scores) and deadlines. (Please see link below with specific eligibility requirements)

Impact: Grades earned in dual enrollment courses can affect a student's college admission, scholarships, and high school graduation.

In Georgia, the Dual Enrollment Program is available to students in grades 10-12 at eligible public or private high schools, as well as home study programs. Students can enroll part-time or full-time.

Which is better to take, AP or Dual Enrollment? There is no short answer, only a personalized one. So read for yourself, talk to a counselor and make the best decision for YOUR education!

What’s the difference between AP and dual enrollment programs? AP courses are reviewed and approved by college faculty to make sure that every student who takes AP is being asked to do college-level work, no matter where they take it. AP Exams are a standard way to measure how well students have mastered the subject matter. Dual enrollment programs don't offer a standard way to measure whether students have mastered college-level work. Because of this, it's difficult for college admission officers to know the quality or difficulty level of any dual enrollment course. College credit is issued from the college and can potentially transfer to another college.

Here at DHS we believe in a combination of dual enrollment and AP tailored to the students academic goals for the best educational outcomes!

We strongly encourage students and families to attend to learn more about program expectations, opportunities, and planning for the upcoming year. I am interested in Dual Enrollment next year. What courses should I take?

Students must plan a full high school schedule without Dual Enrollment courses at this time. DHS counselors cannot advise on Dual Enrollment coursework until state updates are released.

If you would like to research independently, consider the following planning paths:

• Goal: Add rigor while meeting HS graduation requirements?
  • Review the HS Credit Check.
• Goal: Complete potential college coursework?
  • Review a Sample Core Curriculum and an AP Equivalency Chart. Students must send AP scores to the college if bypassing prerequisites.
• Goal: Supplement your curriculum?
  • Review available program options.

I am interested in Dual Enrollment next year. How do I apply to the college?

Follow the Dual Enrollment application process required by each college. Requirements below.

DHS counselors cannot assist with Dual Enrollment applications or next steps until the state releases updated guidance. Students must work directly with the college(s) for now.

Apply to College

This step can be completed at any time between January and April. Submit required documentation by April (Date TBD) 2026 to your college. NO supplemental documents will be submitted after April (Date TBD) 2026.

Application

• The best way to find the college application is to type in "College Name + Dual Enrollment Application". 
• Each college will have their own individual application (if you are using common app, STOP NOW, follow first bullet).
• Each application will ask for TESTING, TRANSCRIPT and College Specific Information including but not limited to: 
  • Verification of Lawful Presence Documentation 
  • College Board Scores: AP Exam Scores

Testing

• To request PSAT scores, complete this form after January 30th.

• SAT/ACT Tests must be submitted via Collegeboard/ACT.

• Accuplacer Tests are offered at the local technical college and must be scheduled with them.

Transcript

All transcript requests must be submitted electronically directly to the university, college or technical school of choice through Parchment. No transcript

GEORGIA TECH, Distance Math and/or Computer Science

• Student must indicate course intent by the FCS April (Date TBD) 2026 Deadline (regardless of opportunity to apply)

• Follow GT application process and deadlines for Summer/Fall/Spring.

• If you are concerned about admittance to GT, you may want to apply to another college in tandem

I am currently participating in Dual Enrollment as a 10th/11th grader. What should I do?

Good news—you are already enrolled in college! We recommend planning two schedules for next year:

1. A full high school schedule only (in case funding is delayed or unavailable), and
2. A schedule assuming no changes to the Dual Enrollment program, if you want to prepare an alternate plan.

You may register with your college if they allow; however, you are doing so at your own risk. DHS cannot update your schedule or guarantee Dual Enrollment participation until the State releases funding guidance. If funding is not approved, students and families may be responsible for any college tuition or fees associated with registered courses.

Note: College courses may need to be dropped if funding is not available.
